NewsNation has named popular broadcast journalist Robert Sherman as its first international correspondent. This will mark the first time that the cable news channel owned by Nexstar will have a position focused specifically on world affairs. To this end, Sherman will be stationed outside of the United States and will officially take up the role in 2026.
Robert Sherman becomes NewsNation’s first international correspondent
Given the presence of The United States in overseas conflicts and international affairs, Sherman believes that his new role, to be based in Rome, Italy, will bring a much-needed perspective to the network.
“This is recognizing there are a lot of stories that impact Americans directly,” he said in an interview with Variety. “We want to be there, in all the hot spots.”
In particular, the 29-year-old anchor expects that NewsNation will assign him to cover the Russia-Ukraine war, the Israel-Palestine conflict, and decisions in Europe that could impact Americans. “There is a big focus on America-centric interest stories, especially how they are going to impact everyday people,” he added.
Sherman’s promotion comes amid the December 11 release of his new book, “Lessons from the Front: A Rookie War Correspondent in Ukraine and Israel.” It covers his experience as a 25-year-old reporter who thought he knew a lot about the world straight out of college, but quickly learned that he had to learn while covering the Russia-Ukraine war on the ground.
“I just had this assumption that almost everyone saw the world through the lens of an American,” he explained before saying that his time beyond US borders has changed his worldview.
Before accepting the new role, Sherman was The White House correspondent for the network and has flown aboard Air Force One while covering the latest news on the Trump administration. Before joining NewsNation, the DePauw University alum spent a couple of years as reporter for Fox News and was also a reporter for WIAT based in Birmingham, Alabama.
