The Monster of Florence on Netflix has everyone wondering if it’s a true story or fiction. The new Netflix drama explores one of Italy’s most haunting murder mysteries, a case that gripped the countryside for decades and continues to spark debate among fans.
Is The Monster of Florence based on a true story?
The Monster of Florence is based on a true story. The Netflix series, created by Leonardo Fasoli and Stefano Sollima, follows a string of murders that took place in Italy between 1968 and 1985.
The killer, known as “Il Mostro,” targeted couples spending time together in quiet, hidden areas known as “lovers’ lanes.” The Guardian revealed that every murder involved the same gun, and many female victims were brutally murdered.
The killings began in 1968 when Barbara Locci and her lover, Antonio Lo Bianco, were brutally murdered. Barbara’s husband, Stefano Mele, was convicted, but the murders continued even while he was in prison, proving he wasn’t the real killer.
Later, another suspect, Pietro Pacciani, was arrested but later cleared. Three men thought to be his partners in the crime were later convicted. The true identity of the Monster remains a mystery to this day.
The show, based on Gianluca Monastra’s book Il Mostro di Firenze. It tells the story from district attorney Silvia Della Monica’s point of view, played by Liliana Bottone. She investigates the murders of two teens and soon discovers shocking connections to the earlier killings.
Throughout the series, Silvia and her team struggle to untangle lies, false leads, and wrongful accusations, showing how hard it was to find the real killer. The series also stars Francesca Olia, Valentino Mannias, Giacomo Fadda, Antonio Tintis, and Marco Bullitta.
The Monster of Florence keeps the tension high while exploring one of Italy’s most disturbing unsolved cases. All four episodes of The Monster of Florence are now streaming on Netflix.
