When Dr. Wolf and Dr. Pierce first evaluate Arianna, she seems to show signs of dementia. This appears to explain her family’s decision to place her under a conservatorship.

But Dr. Wolf suspects there is more going on and plans a night out. Arianna fully involves herself and clearly enjoys the game, showing that her mind is sharper than anyone thought. This makes Dr. Wolf rethink the initial diagnosis.

A couple more tests confirm that Arianna’s brain has an underactive amygdala, the part that controls fear and risk. Her underactive amygdala explains why she is always drawn to risky things and why she constantly feels restless.

Jane Krakowski is a seasoned actress with a very impressive portfolio. She has appeared on hit shows like Ally McBeal and Dickinson. Krakowski also starred in movies including National Lampoon’s Vacation, The Flintstones in Viva Rock Vegas, and Pixels.

She has also earned three Tony nominations. Jane also took home the trophy for Best Featured Actress in a Musical for Nine.

Brilliant Minds is a medical drama that first aired on NBC on September 23, 2024. It returned for its second season on September 22, 2025. The show takes inspiration from the life and work of famous British neurologist and author Dr. Oliver Sacks. He focused on his patients and brought case studies back into the spotlight in medicine.

While the characters are fictional, the series draws heavily from Sacks’ ideas and books. These include The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat and An Anthropologist on Mars.
