Ben Stiller and Christine Taylor discuss 2017 separation in Stiller & Meara: Nothing Is Lost
In his new documentary, Ben Stiller gives viewers insight into the marriage of his parents. He also reveals how their relationship affected him and his sister, Amy Stiller. Another angle explored in the film is Ben’s own reflection on his parents’ six-decade-long marriage. In the documentary, he admits, “I just felt out of balance and unhappy and kind of disconnected from my family, from my kids, and just kind of a little bit lost.”
Ben and Taylor met in 1999 and married in 2000. Their separation took place in 2017, after which they reunited during the COVID-19 pandemic. In the documentary, Ben opens up to Taylor about the emotional weight of their separation, saying, “When we separated, my feeling was like, ‘Oh, I’m failing at this,’ and look at my parents — they have this incredible 50-plus-year marriage, and I can’t live up to that.”
Ben Stiller and Christine Taylor on what ultimately brought them back together
Ben and Taylor worked on many projects together soon after their marriage. Their collaborations include Zoolander, Dodgeball, Tropic Thunder, Zoolander 2, and Arrested Development. Sharing an insight into how he felt when he married Taylor, he said, “I don’t want to become my parents.”
Reflecting on their reconciliation, he explains, “All of a sudden, we were together in the house, and during that time, I started to make the movie, too. So there was sort of this coming together — us talking about what we were going through, our issues, and looking at what my parents had been through, too, in a way I hadn’t looked at it before.”
Stiller & Meara: Nothing Is Lost premiered at the New York Film Festival on October 5, 2025. Apple will release the film in select theaters on October 17 and stream it on Apple TV+ starting October 24.
