Wonder Woman (2009) Blu-ray Review: Still DC Hero’s Best Movie

A streamlined Wonder Woman (2009) Blu-ray release of its commemorative edition has been released. While it’s not packaged with any graphic novels or physical extras, it does feature the beloved animated movie in all of its glory. This reprint is a great purchase for those who don’t already own the underrated DC movie, although there’s no real reason to double-dip.

“On the mystical island of Themsycira, a proud warrior race of Amazon women thrives, shielded from the corrupt world of man. But a betrayal leads to the escape of Ares, the God of War, and Amazon Princess Diana must capture him before he unleashes global chaos and destruction. With the aid of cocky fighter pilot Steve Trevor, Diana tracks Ares to the United States for a battle unlike any humankind has ever faced in this epic tale. Celebrate the princess who becomes the World’s Greatest Super Heroine in this Commemorative Edition,” says the official description.

DC’s animated movies always have fantastic casts, and Wonder Woman is no exception. Keri Russell voices a great version of Diana Prince, while Nathan Fillion is a hilarious Steve Trevor, and Alfred Molina delivers an entertaining performance as the villainous Ares. Other familiar voices include Rosario Dawson, Marg Helgenberger, John DiMaggio, Tara Strong, and more. It’s a star-studded affair, but it’s not stunt casting, as everyone does a really good job and fits their characters well.

The actual story is based on the “Gods and Mortals” arc of the comics, which means it isn’t all that different than the live-action film starring Gal Gadot that would arrive eight years later. Diana is once again chasing down the villainous Ares, while a budding romance with Steve begins and there’s a few humorous moments of Wonder Woman experiencing human society for the first time. At just 74 minutes long, it’s a breezy and entertaining watch that lends itself to rewatches due to its great action scenes.

There’s a good number of special features on the Wonder Woman (2009) Blu-ray, including a commentary track featuring director Lauren Montgomery, Bruce Timm, Gregory Noveck, and Michael Jelenic. It’s a very attentive conversation that goes over a lot of aspects of the creative process. There’s also 50 minutes of documentaries going over Wonder Woman’s role over the years and her origin story, so this is a content-rich pack. Unique to the Commemorative Edition is a 10-minute featurette talking about what makes Wonder Woman a unique character, featuring Montgomery, plus Gal Gadot and Patty Jenkins — so DCEU fans will be pleased.

Wonder Woman (2009) Blu-ray Review: Final Verdict

The latest version of the Wonder Woman Blu-ray doesn’t offer any new extras, but it does feature the film in high definition and all of the bonus features you’d want. Lauren Montgomery’s 2009 movie has aged fantastically, as it is still among the best DC animated movies and is my favorite Wonder Woman movie. Wonderfully adapting the “Gods and Mortals” arc, the animated film is a must-own for DC fans.
