Fans looking forward to seeing The Summer I Turned Pretty star Lola Tung and Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story actor Nicholas Alexander Chavez in the upcoming I Know What You Did Last Summer sequel will be surprised to learn the duo won’t appear in the final cut. Despite filming scenes for the highly anticipated slasher film, both actors were removed during the editing process. So, what exactly happened?
Why were Lola Tung and Nicholas Alexander Chavez cut from I Know What You Did Last Summer?
Director Jennifer Kaytin Robinson confirmed that Tung and Chavez’s scene was originally meant to open the film.
While the performances were praised as “fantastic,” Robinson said the sequence just didn’t work in the finished version of the movie. “It had nothing to do with Lola and Nicholas — they are both so fantastic,” Robinson emphasized. “But in the larger tapestry of the film, it just didn’t fit.” (via People)
She explained that while their scene worked well in isolation, it disrupted the overall pacing and tone once the movie was assembled. All in all, she described it as one of those tough, creative decisions filmmakers must make.
Despite being cut, both actors reportedly handled the decision with grace. Robinson noted their professionalism and understanding, calling them “so sweet” and “so lovely.” In fact, she hinted that this might not be the end of the road for Lola Tung and Nicholas Alexander Chavez in the I Know What You Did Last Summer universe. “Maybe they’ll make the sequel,” she teased.
