Jeff Bridges on How Tron: Ares Brings His Character Back

Tron star Jeff Bridges recently opened up about his unexpected return as Kevin Flynn in the upcoming film Tron: Ares. In a new interview, Bridges discussed how his character might have survived the events of Tron: Legacy, the evolving nature of the Grid, and what fans can expect from Flynn’s mysterious comeback in the third installment of the franchise.

Jeff Bridges confirmed that he will reprise his role as Kevin Flynn in Tron: Ares, despite the character’s apparent death in Tron: Legacy (2010). Speaking to Empire, Bridges said he was “a bit surprised” to be returning, explaining, “This is the Grid. The whole digital universe is all up for grabs. It’s all possible in that place. It worked out that I still have some sort of consciousness.”

In Tron: Legacy, Flynn sacrifices himself by merging with his digital counterpart CLU to prevent him from entering the real world. Both appeared to dissolve in the final act. However, Bridges hinted that Flynn’s essence may have survived digitally, saying, “New s— has come to light.” He described the Grid as a space where boundaries of life and death are flexible.

Bridges also reflected on the evolution of Flynn, who originally sought digital perfection for humanity. “As human beings, we seek perfection. And sometimes we miss the whole point of the thing — the idea of the journey being the destination,” he said. The actor noted that the character’s journey in Tron: Ares will explore this shift in perspective.

Tron: Ares, directed by Joachim Rønning, is the third installment in the Tron franchise and follows a new program, Ares (played by Jared Leto), who leaves the Grid for the real world. Bridges’ return marks his third appearance as Flynn since the franchise’s debut in 1982. The film also stars Greta Lee, Evan Peters, and Gillian Anderson.

Tron: Ares is scheduled to release on October 10, 2025.
