Thanks to the success of Andor, many fans have speculated whether Rogue One director Gareth Edwards would ever direct another Star Wars movie. Unfortunately, the British filmmaker has no plans to revisit a galaxy far, far away.
What did Gareth Edwards say about a possible Star Wars return?
Edwards is currently promoting his new directorial effort, Jurassic World Rebirth. While speaking with Business Insider, Edwards dismissed returning to the Star Wars universe and making another movie.
“I’m very happy to move on and do my thing,” Edwards said.
The behind-the-scenes drama of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story has been speculated about for years. The story goes that Lucasfilm hired Tony Gilroy to oversee five weeks of reshoots. Gilroy wrote additional scenes, served as a second-unit director, and reshaped the ending of the movie.
How much of Edwards’ initial vision of Rogue One is in the final cut? Did Gilroy change more of the movie than originally reported? Those questions remain unanswered. Regardless of who contributed more to the movie, Rogue One received critical acclaim upon its release, and that praise has only increased in the years since.
Rogue One is now considered by some the best Star Wars movie produced since Disney purchased Lucasfilm. Edwards doesn’t feel the same way.
“I don’t agree with it, but I appreciate it,” Edwards said. “I’m very grateful that people say nice things.”
Rogue One follows a group of courageous rebels and their attempt to steal the Death Star’s schematics. The movie’s success led to Andor, Disney+’s prequel show about Cassian Andor in the lead-up to Rogue One.

Next year marks the 10th anniversary of Rogue One. Despite not wanting to make another Star Wars movie, Edwards appreciates that people still have a strong reaction toward it a decade later.
“What you have to keep in your pocket as you go through making other films is that it’s not about how people feel the day it gets released; it’s how people feel about it 10, 20 years from now,” Edwards said. “When you make a movie, you’re living at least a year from now; you’re trying to imagine what it’s like, all these decisions you’re making, what they are going to be like a year from now when this movie is released, what’s the audience going to think?
“And as the movie comes out, you go, ‘I’m going to pretend I’m living 10 years from now, and it doesn’t matter what people say in the moment.’ It’s the kid who comes up to you 20 years from now and goes, ‘Oh my god, I loved that movie!’ I think that’s the reward.”
Rogue One is available to stream on Disney+.
