Brad Pitt calls Alcoholics Anonymous an ‘amazing thing’ as he shared his experience

Brad Pitt has opened up about his time in Alcoholics Anonymous. He called it an “amazing thing” during a candid conversation on the June 23 episode of Armchair Expert with Dax Shepard. Speaking about their first meeting at an AA session, the actor described it as a turning point. He said, “I just thought it was just incredible men sharing their experiences, their foibles, their missteps, their wants, their aches, and a lot of humor with it.”

Shepard, who has long been transparent about his own battle with addiction, asked if Pitt had felt uneasy speaking with him publicly after they met in such a vulnerable setting. Pitt assured him he was “quite at ease.”

The actor went on to say that he grew to appreciate AA meetings so much that they eventually became something he looked forward to. “I was pretty much on my knees. And I was really open,” he said. “I was trying anything and everyone. Anything anyone threw at me. It was a difficult time. I needed rebooting. I needed to wake the f— up in some areas. And it just meant a lot to me.”

Pitt also reflected on the personal growth that followed. He said, “When I’ve stepped in s—, I’m pretty good at taking responsibility for it and owning up to it. And now it’s a quest to, you know, ‘What do I do with this? How can I right this?’ And make sure it doesn’t happen again.”

Shepard jokingly described AA as not exactly a place people end up when life is going great. To this, Pitt responded with a laugh, “No. That’s usually not the entry point.” The two men agreed that entering the program requires a level of personal crisis.

In addition to AA, Pitt shared that he approached therapy with the same level of honesty and desperation. The star said, “When I jumped into therapy then, I was just like, ‘And I did this and I did that and da da da da.’”
