Abe Carver, played by James Reynolds, and Paulina Price, portrayed by Jackée Harry, have been one of the finest couples of Days of Our Lives, and the show is ready to celebrate their third anniversary in the June 20th episode. Reynolds and Harry are thrilled for their on-screen counterparts and recently expressed their take in an interview.
James Reynolds says Abe and Paulina’s wedding in Days of Our Lives was important for African American history
With Abe and Paulina going strong years after they got married, Harry and Reynolds discussed the relationship in an interview ahead of their third anniversary on the show. “They’re energetic, they’re dynamic, and they are different,” Reynolds said about the couple. “They aren’t a carbon copy of each other. They have different attitudes, different motivations and backgrounds. And I think that’s kind of the opposite attracts,” he added. (via Swooon)
Both actors seem to have immense respect for each other and their characters. Harry returned to soap after a long gap. She expressed how glad she was to be paired with James Reynolds. “He really is what you see, which is great. And he took me right in. He taught me a few things. He doesn’t know it, but I watched him from day one, because people think soaps are easy — they’re not,” she stated.
But one of the better things Days of Our Lives did with this couple was adding some cultural significance to their marriage. The creatives’ decision to set the characters’ wedding date as Juneteenth (June 19) is meaningful to both the actors. It is perhaps also important to a large percentage of viewers.
The actors delved into this and emphasized how this was very important. “I thought that showed a depth of understanding that the show had for African American history and American history. I never want to separate the two; I want to be very clear—they’re the exact same thing, especially in these times,” Reynolds noted.
He continued, “I was so, so honored and pleased that we were able to represent what was a new national holiday, is still basically a new national holiday, and that the show bought into it, and every year we make multiple references to Juneteenth. Not just one.”
Thankfully, Abe and Paulina remain a strong couple, and things only seem to be getting better for them.
