Sunny Release Date Set for Apple’s Rashida Jones Dark Comedy

Apple TV+ has finally set the release date for its newest darkly comedic drama Sunny, which will be led by Parks and Recreation alum Rashida Jones. The series is scheduled to start streaming on July 10.

“The series follows Suzie, an American woman living in Kyoto, Japan, whose life is upended when her husband and son disappear in a mysterious plane crash,” reads the logline. “As ‘consolation’ she’s given Sunny, one of a new class of domestic robots made by her husband’s electronics company. Though at first, Suzie resents Sunny’s attempts to fill the void in her life, gradually they develop an unexpected friendship. Together they uncover the dark truth of what really happened to Suzie’s family and become dangerously enmeshed in a world Suzie never knew existed.”

Who’s involved in Sunny?

Sunny is created, written, and executive produced by Katie Robbins, based on Colin O’Sullivan’s Dark Manual novel. The series also stars Hidetoshi Nishijima as Masa Sakamoto, Joanna Sotomura as Sunny, Judy Ongg as Noriko Sakamoto, and more. It is executive produced by Jones, Ravi Nandan, Jess Lubben, and Lucy Tcherniak, with the latter also directing. This marks Jones’ latest collaboration with Apple and A24 after previously working together on Sofia Coppola’s comedy-drama film On the Rocks.
