Steven Yeun on Mickey 17: Bong Joon-ho ‘Keeps Digging Deeper and Deeper’

Steven Yeun says that Bong Joon-ho’s Mickey 17 will be full of surprises.

Speaking with Collider, Yeun was asked if he could tease anything about the character he’s playing in Mickey 17, which releases in 2025.

“I probably can’t, but I will say, experientially, Director Bong is one of my favorite humans and one of my favorite artists,” Yeun said. “I know this, I don’t expect it, but I know that each time working with him is gonna be fantastic and really wonderful. What’s really great is that, it’s not that you don’t think he can surprise you, it’s just seeing him surprise you every time is really wonderful to just be like, “Wow, this artist just keeps digging deeper and deeper, and revealing more of his abilities to us.” So, I’m just really thankful for him. I’m thankful that I got to work with him. He’s the best.”

What is Bong Joon-ho’s Mickey 17 about?

Mickey 17 is based on Edward Ahston’s Mickey7 novel, which was published in 2022.

The novel, according to the synopsis, follows “a disposable employee on a human expedition sent to colonize the ice world Niflheim. Whenever there’s a mission that’s too dangerous — even suicidal — the crew turns to Mickey. After one iteration dies, a new body is regenerated with most of his memories intact. After six deaths, Mickey7 understands the terms of his deal … and why it was the only colonial position unfilled when he took it.”

Along with Yeun, Mickey 17 stars Robert Pattinson, Naomi Ackie, Toni Collette, and Mark Ruffalo.

Bong Joon-ho also wrote the script and produces the movie alongside Dede Gardner, Jeremy Kleiner, and Dooho Choi.

Having been previously scheduled to come out in March 2024, Mickey 17 now releases in United States theaters and IMAX on January 31, 2025.
