Adam Driver Talks ‘Undefinable’ Megalopolis, Playing a ‘Visionary’

Not a whole lot is known about Francis Ford Coppola’s upcoming Megalopolis, and according to star Adam Driver, the film is almost unable to be defined.

Speaking to The Face in a recent interview, Driver was asked about Megalopolis, and revealed that it’s an “undefinable” movie, which he says will make more sense when audiences finally see it.

“It’s kind of undefinable, which feels very general until you watch the movie,” said Driver. “Then my answer will be perfect. There’s not a lot of precedent for it and it’s wild on a big scale, which is what’s really unique about it.”

Driver was also asked about his character, renegade architect Caesar. The actor described him as a “visionary” and almost similar to director Francis Ford Coppola.

“He’s a visionary. He’s very much Francis [Ford Coppola], in a way, where he’s investigated every way of how people can do something and is trying not to get stuck on the right answer. That’s an idea that’s moving to me — and one that reflects Francis,” Driver said.

What is Megalopolis about?

“In New York, a woman, Julia Cicero, is divided between loyalties to her father, Frank, who has a classical view of society, and her architect lover, Caesar, who is more progressive and ready for the future,” the synopsis for the movie reads. “He wants to rebuild New York City as a utopia following a devastating disaster.”

Megalopolis has been Coppola’s passion project since the 1980s. The logline states, “The fate of Rome haunts a modern world unable to solve its own social problems in this epic story of political ambition, genius, and dangerous love.”

Megalopolis stars Adam Driver, Forest Whitaker, Nathalie Emmanuel, Jon Voight, Laurence Fishburne, Aubrey Plaza, Jason Schwartzman, Shia LaBeouf, Talia Shire, Grace VanderWaal, Kathryn Hunter, James Remar, Chloe Fineman, Madeleine Gardella, Isabelle Kusman, D. B. Sweeney, Bailey Ives, Dustin Hoffman, and Giancarlo Esposito.
