Akira Toriyama Passes Away, Dragon Ball Creator Was 68

Akira Toriyama, famed Dragon Ball creator and Dragon Quest artist, has passed away at the age of 68.

The talented mangaka died on March 1 due to suffering an acute subdural hematoma. Bird Studio announced that Toriyama’s family held a funeral service with his family and that they will not be accepting “flowers, condolences gifts, visiting, offerings and others.” Future plans for comemmorating his life are not yet decided, although they’ll be announced in the future. They deeply thank fans for their support and understanding during this time.

“We are deeply saddened to inform you that Manga creator Akira Toriyama passed away on March 1st due to acute subdural hematoma. He was [the] age of 68. It’s our deep regret that he still had several works in the middle of creation with great enthusiasm. Also, he would have many more things to achieve. However, he has left many manga titles and works of art to this world,” says the official statement on the Dragon Ball website.

“Thanks to the support of so many people around the world, he has been able to continue his creative activities for over 45 years. We hope that Akira Toriyama’s unique world of creation continues to be loved by everyone for a long time to come. We inform you this sad news, with gratefulness for your kindness during his lifetime.”

While best known for Dragon Ball, Toriyama also created the successful manga series Dr. Slump and the one-shot Sand Land. He also designed characters for several video games, including the Dragon Quest series, Chrono Trigger, and Blue Dragon. Toriyama was currently working on the upcoming television series Dragon Ball Daima and on the manga Dragon Ball Super.
