Why did Shai storm out of Arun’s home?

Arun is a solitary artist who relocates to a dilapidated apartment in the historic quarter of Mumbai. Following an exhibition of his artwork, he meets Shai. She is an American banker, pursuing her passion for photography in Mumbai. Their brief meeting culminates in a one-night stand. However, Arun is not interested in further involvement. He dismisses any prospects of a relationship. This leaves Shai agitated as she storms out of Arun’s home.

Shortly thereafter, Munna, also known as Zohaib Shaikh, a washerman with aspirations of Bollywood stardom, arrives to deliver Arun’s laundry. Arun moves to a new apartment the following day. He discovers a container left behind by the previous tenant, Yasmin. Within the container, he finds a silver chain, a ring, and three videotapes. The videotapes are labeled as Pehli chitti (First letter), Doosri chitti (Second letter), and Aakhri chitti (Final letter). These tapes serve as video diaries wherein Yasmin communicates with her brother. She offers glimpses into her life and the apartment Arun now occupies.

Meanwhile, Arun receives news from his manager about art dealers planning to open a gallery in Sydney to showcase his work. This prompts him to reminisce about visiting his ex-wife and child settled in Australia. As he begins work on a new painting, Munna crosses paths with Shai during a laundry delivery. This leads to a budding friendship. Munna agrees to guide Shai around Mumbai for her photography project on the city’s underprivileged. Shai promises to shoot a portfolio for Munna to aid his Bollywood aspirations.

Dhobi Ghat ending: What was in Yasmin’s last video tape?

Arun delves deeper into Yasmin’s tapes. He learns about her tumultuous life, including her recent marriage to a distant man. Meanwhile, Shai covertly photographs Arun from the construction site opposite his new apartment. As Munna struggles to find acting opportunities, he showcases Mumbai’s diverse facets to Shai, including the dhobi ghaat where he works. Despite developing feelings for Shai, Munna feels inhibited by his socio-economic status.

One day, Arun invites Shai to his home. He extends an apology for their initial encounter. This unsettles Munna and he feels betrayed. Despite his distress, Shai persuades Munna to continue their collaboration. However, when Shai inadvertently captures Munna at his nocturnal job, he retreats from her. Arun watches Yasmin’s final tape which reveals her intent to end her life. This leaves him shaken and prompts him to vacate the apartment.

Tragedy strikes Munna when he discovers his brother’s demise. He and his family relocate. Determined to pursue his dreams, Munna presents his portfolio to a contact in the film industry. As Arun completes his painting, featuring Yasmin prominently, Shai seeks out Munna for information on his whereabouts. Hurt by her persistence, Munna initially lies but ultimately relents. He chases after Shai’s departing car to provide Arun’s new address, signifying a new chapter in their intertwined journeys.
