The Old Guard 2 Star Gives Update on Netflix Sequel’s Release

The Old Guard 2 star Matthias Schoenaerts says the Netflix sequel is in the final stages of post-production.

Speaking with Collider, Schoenaerts provided an update about the current status of the sequel to 2020’s The Old Guard.

“We shot it approximately a year and a half ago, and I think they’re hitting the last stage of post-production. As far as I’ve understood, I think there’s been a switch at Netflix high up. I think there’s a different CEO, so that leads to a reconsidering of release, and how and when, and that’s not up to me. I don’t know. But I know we’re hitting the last stage of post-production, so it’s gonna show up at some point.”

What do we know about The Old Guard 2?

Announced in January 2021, The Old Guard 2 is directed by Victoria Mahoney. The movie began filming in June 2022, with production then wrapping in September.

Along with Schoenaerts, the movie stars Charlize Theron, KiKi Layne, Marwan Kenzari, Luca Marinelli, Vân Veronica Ngô, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Uma Thurman, and Henry Golding. Plot details remain under wraps at this time.

“It was nice,” Schoenaerts said about reprising his role as Booker in The Old Guard 2, “The people I work with there are friends of mine, so it’s always nice to work with friends and to work with a great production team and lovely director, Victoria Mahoney. I’m very curious to see it, actually. I haven’t seen anything yet, so I’m curious.”

Based on Greg Rucka and Leandro Fernández’s Image Comics series, The Old Guard was released on Netflix in July 2020. The synopsis for the movie, which was directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood, reads, “A group of mercenaries, all centuries-old immortals with the ablity to heal themselves, discover someone is onto their secret, and they must fight to protect their freedom.”

Netflix has not yet announced a release date for The Old Guard 2. The Old Guard, meanwhile, is currently streaming on the platform.
