Christopher Nolan Really Wants to Make a Horror Movie

Oppenheimer director Christopher Nolan would love to make a horror movie, but has struggled to find the perfect idea for one yet.

Christopher Nolan Fascinated by Horror Genre

Nolan was speaking at a BFI event in London yesterday and was asked by a member of the audience if he would ever consider making a horror movie, to which the short answer was, ”I’d love to make a horror film. But I think a really good horror film requires a really exceptional idea. And those are few and far between. So I haven’t found a story that lends itself to that,”

But Nolan didn’t move on from there, as he went into what he found fascinating about the genre.

“But I think it’s a very interesting genre from a cinematic point of view,” said Nolan. ”It’s also one of the few genres where the studios make a lot of these films, and they are films that have a lot of bleakness, a lot of abstraction. They have a lot of the qualities that Hollywood is generally very resistant to putting in films, but that’s a genre where it’s allowable,”

Nolan also admitted Oppenheimer has horror elements as he thinks it ”is appropriate to the subject matter.”

Nolan has dabbled in horror elements in his career before Oppenheimer without going full-on into the genre. Batman Begins‘ Scarecrow sequences are certainly a standout example of that.
