Robert Downey Jr. Nearly Played a Famous Batman Villain

Oppenheimer star Robert Downey Jr. has revealed which famous DC villain he almost played before landing the role of Iron Man.

In a video posted to Twitter, the actor can be seen speaking about a previous instance where he almost worked with Christopher Nolan. As it turns out, the Marvel Cinematic Universe star almost played Dr. Jonathan Crane/Scarecrow — a role that would go to Cillian Murphy in Batman Begins.

“And I remember meeting him for tea and I was like, ‘He doesn’t seem like he’s really leaning on this interview,'” Downey Jr. stated. “He was polite and all that, but you can tell when someone is kind of like … it’s not going to go anywhere.”

Who directed Oppenheimer?

Oppenheimer was written and directed by Christopher Nolan, based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning book “American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer” by Kai Bird and the late Martin J. Sherwin.

Alongside Murphy, Oppenheimer features a star-studded ensemble led by Emily Blunt as Katherine Oppenheimer, Robert Downey Jr. as Lewis Strauss, Matt Damon as General Leslie Groves Jr., Florence Pugh as Jean Tatlock, Josh Hartnett as Ernest Lawrence, Benny Safdie as Edward Teller, and Michael Angarano as Robert Serber.
