Netflix recently released a biographical crime drama streaming television miniseries titled Griselda that delved into the life and actions of Colombian drug lord Griselda Blanco.

Born on February 15, 1943, in Cartagena, Colombia, she and her mother moved to Medellín when she was only three. This exposed her to a life of crime at a very early age. Furthermore, she began a marijuana-dealing business with her first husband Carlos Trujillo. According to Tudum by Netflix, she and her second husband Alberto Bravo ran a cocaine shipping operation in the early 70s.

Apart from trafficking drugs, Blanco took part in several other cartel-based activities. After her arrest in 1985, she was charged with conspiring to manufacture, import, and distribute cocaine. In 1998 she pled guilty to three murder charges. The court ultimately charged her with three concurrent 20-year sentences. However, six years into prison, she was deported to Colombia in 2004.

According to IMDb, Griselda’s synopsis reads, “Fleeing from Medellín to Miami, Griselda Blanco creates one of the most ruthless cartels in history.”

Griselda stars Sofía Vergara as Griselda Blanco. Its creators are Doug Miro, Eric Newman, Carlo Bernard, and Ingrid Escajeda. Apart from Vergara, the series also stars Alberto Guerra, Martin Rodriguez, and others.

What happened to Griselda Blanco?

Eight years after Griselda Blanco returned to her hometown, assassins shot her dead outside a butcher shop. At the time of her death, she was 69 years old. She is buried in Jardines Montesacro cemetery which is located in south Medellín. Surprisingly, the same cemetery is the resting place of the cartel kingpin: Pablo Escobar.

Griselda Blanco went by several nicknames like La Madrina, La Dama de la Mafia, and The Black Widow. According to Men’s Health, she had four sons. Their names were, Dixon Trujillo-Blanco, Uber Trujillo-Blanco, Osvaldo Trujillo-Blanco, and Michael Corleone Blanco. Furthermore, just like Griselda, they worked in the cartel.
