What is One Life about?

“The film tells the true story of Sir Nicholas ‘Nicky’ Winton, a young London broker played by Hopkins, who, in the months leading up to World War II, rescued 669 children from the Nazis. Nicky visited Prague in December 1938 and found families who had fled the rise of the Nazis in Germany and Austria, living in desperate conditions with little or no shelter and food, and under threat of Nazi invasion. He immediately realized it was a race against time. How many children could he and the team rescue before the borders closed?” reads the synopsis.

Based on Barbara Winton’s If It’s Not Impossible… novel, One Life is directed by James Hawkes from a screenplay written by Lucinda Coxon and Nick Drake. Joining Hopkins and Flynn are Helena Bonham Carter as Babi Winton, Lena Olin as Grete Winton, Jonathan Pryce as Martin Blake, Samantha Spiro as Esther Rantzen, Alex Sharp as Trevor Chadwick, Romola Garai as Doreen Warriner, and more.

The film had its world premiere at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival, where it received positive reviews from critics. It currently holds a 90% Tomatometer rating on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 49 reviews.
