American Born Chinese Canceled at Disney+ After Season 1

According to Deadline, Disney+ has officially decided not to renew its coming-of-age fantasy drama American Born Chinese for a second season. The cancellation comes after less than a year since the Michelle Yeoh-led series had debuted its 8-episode first season. The outlet notes that 20th Television is currently planning to shop the show to other streamers or networks.

What was American Born Chinese about?

“It told the story of Jin Wang, an average teenager juggling his high school social life with his home life,” reads the synopsis. “When he meets a new foreign student on the first day of the school year, even more worlds collide as Jin is unwittingly entangled in a battle of Chinese mythological gods.”

Disney+’s American Born Chinese was directed by Destin Daniel Cretton from a screenplay written by brothers Kelvin Yu (Bob’s Burgers) and Charles Yu (Westworld), with Kelvin Yu as the showrunner. It was described as a genre-hopping action-comedy that explored issues of identity, culture, and family. It starred Yeoh, Ben Wang, Yeo Yann Yann, Chin Han, Daniel Wu, Ke Huy Quan, former Taekwondo champion Jim Liu, and Sydney Taylor.

American Born Chinese was executive produced by Cretton, the Yu Brothers, Gene Luen Yang, Erin O’Malley, Melvin Mar, Jake Kasdan, and Asher Goldstein. The series was a production by 20th Television.
