Mufasa: The Lion King Reveals New Plot Details for Disney Spin-off

A new synopsis for Disney’s Mufasa: The Lion King has surfaced online.

Per What’s On Disney Plus, The Hollywood Handle tweeted a new synopsis for the upcoming Mufasa: The Lion King, which seemingly serves as both a prequel and a sequel to 2019’s The Lion King.

“The movie will follow the rise of one of Pride Lands’ greatest kings, returns to the savannah where Rafiki tells Kiara – Simba and Nala’s daughter – the story of her grandfather, with some comments coming from Timon and Pumbaa,” the tweet reads.

What else do we know about Mufasa: The Lion King?

Following the release of Jon Favreau’s computer-animated Lion King Remake in July 2019, Disney announced a new prequel Lion King movie was in development in September 2020. The movie is being directed by Moonlight and If Beale Street Could Talk’s Barry Jenkins, while Jeff Nathanson is writing the screenplay.

Seth Rogen, Billy Eichner, and John Kani will all reprise their roles as Pumbaa, Timon, and Rafiki in Mufasa: The Lion King, while Aaron Pierre and Kelvin Harrison Jr. will voice younger versions of Mufasa and Scar.

“We’re going to really get a backstory to Scar, and he is hilarious, he is still very, very spicy,” Harrison Jr. told Fandango about taking on the role in April 2023. “He is also the sweetest, the sweetest young lion you’ll ever meet, too, so it’s going to be fun seeing the relationship between Scar and Mufasa, that’s what I can say.”

While production on Mufasa: The Lion King was slowed down in July 2023 due to the Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) strike, the movie is now scheduled to release in theaters on December 20, 2024, from Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures.

Favreau’s The Lion King, meanwhile, is currently streaming on Disney+.
