The first trailer for Alex Garland and A24’s Civil War has been released.

A24 has posted the first trailer for Civil War, the new political thriller written and directed by Garland. The footage sees the United States in shambles after the country has gone to war with itself, to the point where the three-term president, played by Nick Offerman, has ordered air strikes on his home turf.

What do we know about Civil War?

“A race to the White House in a near-future America balanced on the razor’s edge,” the official synopsis reads.

Along with Parks and Rec and The Last of Us’ Offerman, Civil War stars Kirsten Dunst (Spider-Man, The Power of the Dog), Cailee Spaeny (Priscilla, Pacific Rim: Uprising), Wagner Moura (Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, The Gray Man), Stephen McKinley Henderson (Dune, Beau Is Afraid), and Jesse Plemons (Killers of the Flower Moon, Judas and the Black Messiah).

The movie is written and directed by Garland, who has worked with A24 a number of times in the past. Garland made his feature film directorial debut in 2014 with A24’s Ex Machina, which starred Oscar Isaac, Domhnall Gleeson, and Alicia Vikander. He followed that with the Natalie Portman-led Annihilation in 2018 before he went on to direct 2022’s Men with Jessie Buckley and Roy Kinnear.

“I know when I put something out there if it’s going to p-ss a bunch of people off,” Garland told The Daily Telegraph when Men was coming out in May 2022. “The film [Civil War] I’m making now is also going to wind some people up.”

Garland additionally was a writer on 2002’s 28 Days Later, 2007’s Sunshine, and 2012’s Dredd.

Civil War releases in theaters and in IMAX in the United States on April 26, 2024, from A24.
