Following its massive success at the summer box office, Greta Gerwig‘s live-action Barbie movie will soon finally be making its Max debut. Warner Bros. Pictures has officially announced the Barbie Max release date for the Margot Robbie-led fantasy comedy, which will include an American Sign Language (ASL) version. It is scheduled to start streaming on Max on December 15 at 12am PT/3am ET.

Who made Barbie with ASL version?

Max’s Barbie with ASL version is produced ASL performer Leila Hanaumi (The Laramie Project, ASL cover for Tove Lo in “True Romance” music video). This version will be displayed as a unique title in-app and can be identified by its key art with the sign language symbol. In addition, the streamer will also be hosting a special community screening of Barbie with ASL on December 14 in LA, where Robbie and Hanaumi are expected to attend.

“Max is the premiere destination for storytelling, so being able to share the biggest movie of the year in ASL, the first language for many, will make this story resonate in a more meaningful way,” HBO boss Casey Bloys said in a statement. “By offering sign language interpretation, we will build upon the film’s empowering message of inclusiveness and offer a unique viewing experience for the Deaf community to enjoy with family and friends.”

Barbie was directed by Gerwig from a screenplay she co-wrote with Noah Baumbach. It starred Robbie, Ryan Gosling, America Ferrera, Simu Liu, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Scott Evans, Kate McKinnon, Ariana Greenblatt, Alexandra Shipp, Emma Mackey, Issa Rae, Michael Cera, Hari Nef, Will Ferrell, Helen Mirren, Dua Lipa, and more.During its theatrical run, it earned a worldwide gross of over $1.4 billion, making it the highest-grossing movie of 2023.
