Is Furiosa a Mad Max Sequel Prequel or Spin-off

Is Furiosa a Mad Max Sequel, Prequel, or Spin-off? Timeline Explained

After the recent Furiosa trailer, fans wish to know where the film takes place in the Mad Max timeline. Is it a prequel or a sequel to Fury Road? Here’s all you need to know.

Is Furiosa a prequel or sequel to Mad Max: Fury Road?

“Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” is a prequel to Fury Road that tells Furiosa’s odyssey before we saw Charlize Theron play an older version of her.

Mad Max: Fury Road established Furiosa’s character in the Mad Max franchise. But now, Anya Taylor-Joy replaces Charlize Theron to play a younger version of the character when she gets taken away from her family and home. The movie showcases the origin of Imperator Furiosa, revealing how she found herself in the service of Immortan Joe, years before killing him in Fury Road.

The official synopsis of the movie states:

“As the world fell, young Furiosa is snatched from the Green Place of Many Mothers and falls into the hands of a great Biker Horde led by the Warlord Dementus. Sweeping through the Wasteland, they come across the Citadel presided over by The Immortan Joe. While the two Tyrants war for dominance, Furiosa must survive many trials as she puts together the means to find her way home.”

So, we’d be seeing a young Furiosa who is possibly in her early 20s, which could reveal where Furiosa takes place in the timeline of the Mad Max Saga.

Furiosa’s place in the Mad Max timeline explained

Furiosa takes place after Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome, but way before Mad Max: Fury Road.

The following list reveals when each Mad Max movie takes place:

  • Mad Max (1979) – Mid-1980s.
  • Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior (1981) – Late-1980s, 3 years after Mad Max.
  • Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome (1985) – Early 2000s, 15 Years after The Road Warrior
  • Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga (2024) – 2030s, likely about 15-20 years before Fury Road.
  • Mad Max: Fury Road (2015) – Possibly 2050s.

While it’s tough to nail down an exact year for Fury Road, it has been established that the film took place somewhere around the 2050s. So, judging by Anya Taylor-Joy’s age, the Furiosa prequel could be placed in the 2030s, or late 2020s, about 15-20 years before the events of Fury Road.

The Furiosa panel at CCXP also corroborated this timeline by revealing that the film takes place about 45 years after the collapse shown in the first Mad Max movie. George Miller also revealed that the film’s story will span multiple years. As for The Wasteland, it will likely take place after Fury Road, if it happens.
