Is Godzilla Minus One a Reboot, Sequel, or Prequel?

While Godzilla Minus One is out in Japan and has already turned into a huge success, it’s yet to be released in the US. With its release date approaching, many fans are wondering whether it is a reboot, a sequel, or a prequel. Does it have any connections to the MonsterVerse? Here’s all you need to know.

Is Godzilla Minus One a reboot?

Despite being the 33rd outing for Gojira, Toho’s Godzilla Minus One starts a new continuity that could establish a new cinematic universe.

The official synopsis of the film states that “after the war, Japan’s economic state has been reduced to zero. Godzilla appears and plunges the country into a negative state.”

Most fans have become very used to seeing a protector version of Godzilla, especially with Hollywood’s ongoing MonsterVerse. But Toho’s latest outing brings in a fully powered angry version of the infamous Kaiju that wreaks havoc across Japan.

Similar to 2016’s Shin Godzilla, Godzilla Minus One is also a reboot and starts an entirely new continuity. It is not connected to any past version of the character. Given that it has already secured a record-breaking $7 million opening weekend in Japan, it is expected to turn into a cinematic universe for Toho in the future.

Is Godzilla Minus One a sequel or a prequel?

Godzilla Minus One is neither a sequel nor a prequel. It is not connected to any past version, including Hollywood’s MonsterVerse, and starts an entirely new narrative.

Godzilla Minus One brings the titan to its roots and delivers something fresh while keeping certain aspects of Gojira familiar. It is the first film in its own separate universe of the Godzilla Multiverse.
