The Velveteen Rabbit Trailer Previews Apple TV+’s Adaptation of Beloved Christmas Story

Apple TV+ has released a new trailer for The Velveteen Rabbit, a new 40-minute Christmas special based on Margery Williams’ beloved children’s book.

The trailer for Apple TV+’s new adaptation of The Velveteen Rabbit previews a heartwarming Christmas story featuring both live-action and animated scenes. The screenplay for the new adaptation comes from Tom Bidwell, while Magic Light Pictures co-founder Martin Pope produces the special.

What is The Velveteen Rabbit about?

“The new special based on the treasured, classic children’s book by Margery Williams, celebrates the magic of unconditional love,” the synopsis reads, per ComicBook. “When seven-year-old William receives a new favorite toy for Christmas, he discovers a lifelong friend and unlocks a world of magic. Produced by Magic Light Pictures, the 40-minute special from Apple TV+ expertly mixes live-action and stunning animation to perfectly capture the imagination of a child and to lean into the timeless classic in a way you’ve always envisioned, but never seen before.”

Directed by Jennifer Perrott and Rick Thiele, The Velveteen Rabbit stars Phoenix Laroche as William. The voice cast also includes Helena Bonham Carter as Wise Horse, Nicola Coughlan as Playroom Fairy, Bethany Antonia as Female Rabbit, Lois Chimimba as Car, Paterson Joseph as King, Clive Rowe as Lion, Nathaniel Parker as Male Rabbit, Tilly Vosburgh as Momo, and Samantha Colley as Mother.

Published in 1922, Williams’ The Velveteen Rabbit has been adapted into animated specials, feature films, and more, several times before. Christopher Plummer, for example, narrated an animated retelling of the story that was released in 1985, while Michael Landon Jr. directed a Velveteen Rabbit feature film with Jane Seymour, Tom Skerritt, and Ellen Burstyn that was released in 2009.

The Velveteen Rabbit releases on Apple TV+ on November 22, 2023.
