How Many People Did John Wayne Gacy Kill?

John Wayne Gacy murdered several young men and boys in the Chicago area in the 1970s, resulting in his conviction. Authorities discovered most of his victims’ remains either in a crawl space beneath his suburban Chicago house or buried elsewhere on the property.

Gacy, the notorious serial killer, reportedly lured and abused young boys and men at his home, making him one of the worst murderers in US history. The serial killer tricked and strangled his victims by slipping a rope around their necks and slowly tightening it.

The authorities put an end to Gacy’s killing spree after the family of one of his victims filed a missing report. The accused allegedly murdered a minimum of 33 young boys and men.

John Wayne Gacy was sentenced to death for every murder committed

Authorities began investigating John Wayne Gacy only after one of his victims, Robert Piest, went missing. According to reports, someone recognized Gacy talking to Piest shortly before he went missing. The discovery of Gacy’s prior sodomy arrest in Iowa escalated the case, leading to further investigations by the police.

The police obtained a search warrant and started surveilling Gacy‘s house, suspecting he might be holding Piest hostage. During the second search, the police discovered human remains in the crawlspace, leading to a confession from Gacy. As a result, they conducted a more thorough search for bodies on his property.

On February 6, 1980, authorities brought John Wayne Gacy to trial, charging him with 33 murders. His defense team tried to prove that he had multiple personality disorder and claimed that Gacy had four personalities. Meanwhile, the prosecutors argued that he was mentally sound and fully responsible for his actions.

The jury reached a guilty verdict for Gacy after deliberating for one hour and fifty minutes on March 12. As per The New York Times, the court sentenced Gacy to death for every murder he committed. On May 10, 1994, authorities executed Gacy by lethal injection.
