ComingSoon has an exclusive clip from the upcoming South Korean creature feature, The Fifth Thoracic Vertebra.

Exclusive The Fifth Thoracic Vertebra Clip

The movie’s story begins when a mysterious mold starts spreading across the surface of an abandoned mattress, and a sentient creature begins to take shape from within. Feasting on its unsuspecting victims’ vertebrae while they rest, the creature grows stronger, finding nourishment not only in the bones and sinew it assimilates but also in the hopes, fears, and emotions of all those it encounters.

Hailed as both “innovative” and a “new kind of creature feature” (The Austin Chronicle), Syeyoung Park’s The Fifth Thoracic Vertebra, a festival favorite around the globe and winner of Best Director and Audience Awards at Bucheon Fantastic Film Festival and a Special Mention at Fantasia Fest, is a “melancholic, monstrous romantic horror” (Projected Figures) that is “as weird as it is unique” (Asian Movie Pulse).

The film is written and directed by Syeyoung Park (who also produces, edits, lights, and handles cinematography!) and stars Jihyeon Park, Hyein Moon, and Seokyoung Haam.

Director Syeyoung Park had this to say about the movie.

”Where do all the promises, curses, scraps, and unfinished businesses go when a relationship ends? In The Fifth Thoracic Vertebra, these abstract lumps hardened to create a mold on the bed two lovers once occupied, and journeys to the end of the mold-covered bed’s petty life and the many different lovers it meets on the way. If we follow the journey, I hope we might be able to catch a glimpse of where all these bits and scraps, promises and curses end up and what is awaiting them there.”

The Fifth Thoracic Vertebra has its North American premiere on October 20, 2023, via the IndiePIx Unlimited SVOD service and Virtual Cinema.
