Alexander Payne Is Working on a Western Movie

Oscar-winning director and screenwriter Alexander Payne is working on a Western movie alongside writer David Hemingson, the director recently revealed.

Payne has found a creative partner to work with

During an appearance at the Lumière Film Festival in Lyon (via Variety) to help premiere his upcoming film The Holdovers, Payne revealed that he and Hemingson — who also co-wrote The Holdovers — are set to work on developing a Western movie, something Payne has said he’s always wanted to do.

“I finally found a creative partner who shares the same zeal that I have for Westerns,” said Payne. “[What matters is] a shared sensibility about what makes a good movie, then it’s just a matter of luck about finding the right person, as I have the luck in finding this guy.”

Payne is best known for his writing work on 2004’s Sideways and 2011’s The Descendants, both of which earned him wins for Best Adapted Screenplay at the Academy Awards.

The director’s last film was 2017’s Downsizing, which received mixed reviews from critics and audiences alike, but was chosen by the National Board of Review as one of the best films of 2017.
