Roderick and Madeline Usher

What did Roderick and Madeline do in The Fall of the House of Usher ending?

Towards the end, it was revealed that Roderick and Madeline Usher had made a deal with Verna in the early 80s, ultimately leading to the Usher children’s deaths.

Throughout the series, Verna is at the center of all Usher children’s deaths. The reason for that was revealed in the final episode, where young Roderick and Madeline Usher made a “Faustian deal” with Verna, who seemingly had supernatural abilities.

Apparently, they had entrapped the previous CEO of Fortunato Pharmaceuticals, Rufus Wilmot Griswold, in the company’s basement behind a brick wall. But looking for an alibi, they met the bartender, Verna, who offered them a deal.

It stated the twins would continue to live a lavish lifestyle and never suffer any legal consequences for what they did to Rufus. However, the price for that will be the death of their bloodline along with them.

The Usher twins agreed to this deal with the “devil,” which played out exactly as Verna stated. Roderick became the CEO of Fortunato and he, along with his sister, basked in their riches. But their greed resulted in the deaths of Roderick’s children and granddaughter, Lenore, at the hands of Verna. Roderick confessed all this to his long-time investigator, Auguste Dupin, at his childhood home.

Did Roderick and Madeline Usher die at the end?

The series ends with Roderick and Madeline’s gruesome deaths and we literally see the House Usher crumbling down, ending their bloodline and Verna’s deal.

While confessing his sins to Auguste Dupin, Roderick also revealed that he had spiked Madeline’s drink and left her to die in the basement. However, he clearly wasn’t successful as she appeared with her eyes gauged out. Madeline then strangled her brother to death. The scene was similar to how their mother Eliza attacked their father earlier.

Following that, Dupin rushed out of the house and watched it collapse. Juno inherited Fortunato and dissolved it to open a rehab organization. Meanwhile, Arthur Pym was arrested, and the series ended with Vera visiting the graves of all the dead Ushers.
