New Exorcist Trilogy Still Moving Forward, Sequel Changes ‘Likely’

Despite a middling critical response from fans and critics alike, the new Exorcist trilogy is still set to continue — though changes are likely coming.

The Hollywood Reporter published a report stating that, according to the outlet’s sources, Universal is still committed to making two more Exorcist movies to finish the new trilogy. That being said, the sources noted that the mixed reception to The Exorcist: Believer will “almost certainly demand some degree of creative re-think for the next two films.”

The next film in the series, The Exorcist: Deceiver, is currently set to release in 2025. David Gordon Green is expected to return to direct, though a recent interview with THR had the director cast a bit of doubt on if he’d continue to occupy the director’s chair.

“Since the death of his pregnant wife in a Haitian earthquake 12 years ago, Victor Fielding has raised their daughter, Angela on his own,” reads the synopsis. “But when Angela and her friend Katherine, disappear in the woods, only to return three days later with no memory of what happened to them, it unleashes a chain of events that will force Victor to confront the nadir of evil and, in his terror and desperation, seek out the only person alive who has witnessed anything like it before: Chris MacNeil.”

Who directed The Exorcist: Believer?

The Exorcist: Believer is the direct sequel to the original horror feature, which was adapted from William Peter Blatty’s novel. David Gordon Green directed from a screenplay he co-wrote with Scott Teems, Danny McBride, and Peter Sattler. The film sees the return of Oscar winner Ellen Burstyn, who was joined by Leslie Odom Jr., Ann Dowd, Raphael Sbarge, and Jennifer Nettles, with newcomers Lidya Jewett and Olivia Marcum.

The sequel was produced by Jason Blum, David Robinson, and James Robinson, with Green, McBride, Couper Samuelson, and Stephanie Allain having executive produced. It was a co-production between Blumhouse and Morgan Creek Production.
