The Expendables 4 Reactions Slam Sequel as ‘Barely Watchable,’ ‘Instantly Forgettable’

Early reactions to Expend4bles, also known as The Expendables 4, are calling it “very disappointing” and an “instantly forgettable sequel.”

The first reactions to Expend4bles, which releases in United States theaters on September 22, have emerged on social media. While some are praising the movie for being fun, the vast majority of reactions out there appear to be negative and are criticizing the fourth Expendables film for its script, visual effects, and more.

The Hashtag Show’s Hunter Bolding wrote, “I was very disappointed by Expend4bles. It makes an absolutely boneheaded decision right at the beginning of the movie and keeps going with a weak script. Tony Jaa and Jason Statham do the heavy lifting to make this one barely watchable. Needed more firepower.”

Josh Barton called it “absolute trash” and the “worst” Expendables movie yet, while Phil Roberts said the movie has “mediocre CGI, inert performances & a wafer thin plot.”

Breakfast All Day’s Christy Lemire and Alonso Duralde echoed similar sentiments regarding the film’s visual effects, with Duralde saying they’re “some of the worst I’ve ever seen in what we would call a major motion picture.” He continued, “There’s a whole part where a plane is landing and things are blowing up, and it looks like a video game from 1992.”

Jeff Schwartz, meanwhile, called the film “awesome” and specifically highlighted Megan Fox and Tony Jaa’s performances. The Cosmic Circus’ James Preston Poole noted the movie has “enough gratuitously gory kills and one-liners to get the job done” while also saying it’s “the kind of movie I would’ve gone nuts for as a teenager.”

What is Expend4bles about?

“A new generation of stars join the world’s top action stars for an adrenaline-fueled adventure in Expend4bles,” the official synopsis reads. “Reuniting as the team of elite mercenaries, Jason Statham, Dolph Lundgren, Randy Couture, and Sylvester Stallone are joined for the first time by Curtis ’50 Cent’ Jackson, Megan Fox, Tony Jaa, Iko Uwais, Jacob Scipio, Levy Tran, and Andy Garcia. Armed with every weapon they can get their hands on and the skills to use them, The Expendables are the world’s last line of defense and the team that gets called when all other options are off the table. But new team members with new styles and tactics are going to give “new blood” a whole new meaning.”

Directed by Scott Waugh, Expend4bles hits theaters in the United States on September 22.
