Next Goal Wins Images Preview Taika Waititi and Michael Fassbender’s Sports Comedy

New images from Taika Waititi’s Next Goal Wins preview the upcoming sports comedy starring Michael Fassbender.

Per Collider, Searchlight Pictures has released new images from the Taika Waititi-directed Next Goal Wins. Based on a true story (and a 2014 documentary of the same name by Mike Brett and Steve Jamison), the film stars Fassbender as Thomas Rongen, the coach who led the American Samoa football team to qualify for the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

What is Next Goal Wins about?

“Next Goal Wins follows the American Samoa soccer team, infamous for their brutal 31-0 FIFA loss in 2001,” the official synopsis reads. “With the World Cup Qualifiers approaching, the team hires down-on-his-luck, maverick coach Thomas Rongen (Fassbender) hoping he will turn the world’s worst soccer team around in this heartfelt underdog comedy.”

Next Goal Wins also stars Elisabeth Moss, Will Arnett, Waititi, Oscar Kightley, Uli Latukefu, Rachel House, Kaimana, David Fane, Beulah Koale, Chris Alosio, and Rhys Darby

The screenplay was co-written by Waititi and Ian Morris. Waititi, Jonathan Cavendish, Garrett Basch, Brett, and Jamison all serve as producers.

Waititi’s previous directing credits include 2007’s Eagle vs Shark, 2010’s Boy, 2014’s What We Do in the Shadows, 2016’s Hunt for the Wilderpeople, 2017’s Thor: Ragnarok, 2019’s Jojo Rabbit, and 2022’s Thor: Love and Thunder. For television, Waititi co-created FX’s Reservation Dogs and stars in Our Flag Means Death. He’s currently working on an untitled Star Wars film that does not yet have an official release date.

Fassbender, meanwhile, also stars in David Fincher’s The Killer, which is getting a limited theatrical release on October 27, 2023, before it hits Netflix on November 10, 2023.

Next Goal Wins releases theatrically in the United States on November 17, 2023.
