You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah Has Several John Hughes Easter Eggs

Director Sammi Cohen confirmed that there are several John Hughes Easter eggs hidden in the production design of Netflix’s You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah.

Speaking with Variety, Cohen was asked if there were any classic teen movies that You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah was inspired by.

“Absolutely,” Cohen answered. “The spirit of this film really celebrates the spirit of films like Clueless and the John Hughes catalogue and Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. And you know, our production design was really informed [by those films]. Like in the Friedman house, Stacy’s bedroom is a little homage to Sixteen Candles, the Friedman kitchen is a little homage to Ferris Bueller.

“I think I’ve always loved the coming-of-age genre. With Bat Mitzvah specifically, you’ll find a lot of the nuances of indie filmmaking, but with these big classic comedic swings, and we referenced everything from Shiva Baby to Mean Girls. There’s even a little homage to John Hughes himself in the movie theatre scene, if you look at the marquee.”

You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah stars Adam Sandler and his family

Based on the 2005 young adult novel of the same name by Fiona Rosenbloom, You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah is a new coming-of-age movie starring Adam Sandler and his daughters, Sunny and Sadie Sandler. Additionally, Sandler’s wife, Jackie Sandler, has a role in the film, while his on-screen spouse is played by Idina Menzel. Samantha Lorraine, Dylan Hoffman, Sarah Sherman, Jackie Hoffman, and Luis Guzmán also star in the movie.

“Stacy and Lydia are BFFs who’ve always dreamed about having epic bat mitzvahs,” the synopsis for the film reads. “However, things start to go comically awry when a popular boy and middle school drama threatens their friendship and their rite of passage.”

You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah is now streaming on Netflix.
