Michael Cera Considered Quitting Acting After Superbad

Michael Cera considered quitting acting after his breakout hit in Superbad.

The actor famous for his roles in Scott Pilgrim vs. the World and Juno commented on what it was like to be thrown into the spotlight. After landing a part in the TV series Arrested Development, Cera was able to find widespread success in 2007 when his movies Superbad and Juno came out, launching him into the Hollywood spotlight.

“That was sort of overwhelming,” he says. “I didn’t know how to handle walking down the street. Fame makes you very uncomfortable in your own skin, and makes you paranoid and weird. There were lots of great things about it, and I met a lot of amazing people, but there’s a lot of bad energies, too, ones that I was not equipped to handle.”

The weekend Superbad came out, Cera went to a bar with his friends, “and it was a mistake. It was like a burning feeling the whole time, just like everybody was so aware of me.” He continues, “I really didn’t know if I was going to keep being an actor.” However, at the time, he was already committed to his next star vehicle, Edgar Wright’s action comedy Scott Pilgrim vs. the World. “I was already committed to it, and went and did it, and obviously feel so grateful that that happened.”

What is the next Michael Cera movie?

Cera will appear as Allan in the upcoming Greta Gerwig fantasy comedy movie Barbie, starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling.

Barbie releases on July 21, 2023, by Warner Bros. Pictures.
