Sylvester Stallone’s Hollywood legacy

The soon-to-be-77-year-old Stallone began his acting career in 1969. He rose to prominence thanks to his role as Rocky Balboa in the iconic 1976 boxing film Rocky, which he also wrote the screenplay for. Stallone went on to reprise his role as Rocky in five sequels, as well as in the first two entries in the Creed spin-off series.

Stallone added another iconic character to his résumé in 1982, playing John J. Rambo in the action film First Blood. He went on to reprise the role in four sequels. Some of Stallone’s other notable credits include Sergeant John Spartan in Demolition Man (1993), the title role in comic book adaptation Judge Dredd (1995), and The Toymaker in Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over (2003).

More recently, Stallone has led the charge in The Expendables franchise, sharing the screen with other ’80s action stars like Dolph Lundgren, Jean-Claude Van Damme, and Arnold Schwarzenegger. He has even carved out a place in the two biggest modern superhero franchises, playing Stakar Ogord in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and King Shark in the DC Extended Universe.

Fans can next see Stallone in The Expendables 4, in theaters Sept. 22.
