The Diplomat Season 2 Announced by Netflix, Keri Russell Reacts

The Diplomat Season 2 is on the way as Netflix has renewed its hit political drama series.

The renewal comes after the Keri Russell-led series debuted on April 20. It had a successful start as it ranked No. 1 on Netflix’s Top 10 TV English list and scored 57.48 million hours viewed in its first weekend. The Diplomat Season 2 details will be shared at a later time.

“I am thrilled to be headed back for another round of this smart screwball show,” said Russell of The Diplomat Season 2 renewal. “Dare I say it’s fun? Thank you Netflix for giving us another shot.”

Meanwhile, Netflix Vice President of Drama Series Jinny Howe praised Russell’s performance and the show’s achievements.

“Fans around the world are loving every minute of The Diplomat’s gripping and propulsive drama and embracing Keri Russell’s powerful performance as Kate Wyler,” said Howe. “After that jaw-dropping cliffhanger, we can’t wait for them to see what the amazing visionary team of Debora Cahn, Janice Williams, and Keri Russell have in store for Season 2.”

The Diplomat is created and executive produced by Debora Cahn, who is also serving as the showrunner. Joining Russell are Rufus Sewell, David Gyasi, Ali Ahn, Rory Kinnear, and Ato Essandoh. Additional cast includes Celia Imrie, Michael McKean, Nana Mensah, T’Nia Miller, and Miguel Sandoval in guest-starring roles.

“Kate Wyler (Russell) is the new U.S. Ambassador to the United Kingdom. She was supposed to go to Afghanistan,” reads the synopsis. “She’s great in a crisis zone. In a historic home… less so. War is brewing on one continent and boiling over on another. Kate will have to diffuse international crises, forge strategic alliances in London, and adjust to her new place in the spotlight — all while trying to survive her marriage to fellow career diplomat and political star Hal Wyler (Rufus Sewell). It is a high-stakes, contemporary political drama about the transcendence and torture of long-term relationships, between countries and people.”
