Mario Creator Shigeru Miyamoto Teases Future Nintendo Movies

The Super Mario Bros. Movie has been a smash hit so far. As it continues to earn at the box office, legendary video game designer and Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto has teased the possibility of future Nintendo movies based on Nintendo games.

Speaking to Nikkei (translation via VGC), Miyamoto — who created Donkey Kong, Mario Bros., and many other of Nintendo’s most well-known properties and now works as a “Creative Fellow” at the company — teased that future Nintendo movie adaptations could feature different characters from the company.

“Please keep an eye on our next production,” Miyamoto said of future Nintendo movies. He then noted that “Nintendo is like a talent agency. We have many other entertainers (on our roster).”

Miyamoto wouldn’t disclose any other information but noted that there were various ways to develop characters and some that might be more “suitable” for movies than others.

“There are various ways to develop characters (for the screen), including characters that are suitable for film and characters that are well known.”

Following the release of The Super Mario Bros. Movie earlier this month, the film has quickly become a massive success for Nintendo, Illumination, and Universal Pictures. So far, the film has grossed $748.7 million worldwide at the box office, making it the highest-grossing film of 2023 and also making it the highest-grossing film based on a video game ever.

The feature also set box office records for the biggest worldwide opening weekend for an animated film ever and is expected to surpass $1 billion at the box office when all is said and done.
