Box Office Results: Barbarian & Brahmastra Lead Mediocre Weekend

Disney led the way at the domestic box office with Barbarian (20th Century Studios), which earned $10 million in its first week of release, and Brahmastra Part One: Shiva, which hauled in $4.4 million in its debut frame. The latter also took in $19.5 million from India and the UK, per Deadline, which means Brahmastra kicked off its run with $26.5 million globally.

Barbarian, an R-rated horror film that earned stellar reviews from critics, came in higher than expected, but wasn’t enough to propel the weekend beyond ho-hum results.

Ironically, the Mouse House opted to release what might have been a decent-sized hit, Pinocchio, directed by Robert Zemeckis and starring Tom Hanks, on Disney+. The live-action remake wasn’t particularly loved by critics, but name value and star power might have given the theatrical marketplace a much-needed kick at this point in the year.

Elsewhere, Top Gun: Maverick passed Frozen II to become the No. 11 all-time grossing film worldwide and remains within firing distance of Furious 7, but odds are Tom Cruise’s blockbuster has finally run out of gas after accumulating a gargantuan $1.453 billion worldwide.

Looking ahead, it’s possible we don’t see a decent-sized hit until Halloween Ends on October 14. Yikes.
