All Quiet on the Western Front Teaser Previews Netflix’s Gripping War Drama

Netflix has dropped the first teaser for All Quiet on the Western Front, its forthcoming war drama based on Eric Maria Remarque’s bestselling classic novel of the same name. This actually marks the first time that the novel has been adapted into a German film.

“There’s a feeling that will be with us for our whole life: the feeling of the legacy of two wars,” director Edward Berger said in a statement (via Tudum). “Our view of war is dominated by sorrow and shame, by devastation and guilt. Nothing positive remains, not the tiniest spark of heroism. I found making our history, our background, and our attitude to war the driving force behind a film a great challenge. And I thought that this very specific German perspective may well be of interest to people in other countries too. Especially at the moment.”

The video gives us our first look at the harrowing tale of young German soldiers facing the reality of war and its tragic consequences. It is scheduled to make its debut on October 28.

All Quiet on the Western Front is written and directed by Edward Berger. The film stars Albrecht Schuch as Stanislaus Katczinsky, Aaron Hilmer as Paul’s mentor, Moritz Klaus, Edin Hasanovic, Adrian Grünewald, Thibault de Montalembert, Devid Striesow, and Daniel Brühl.

“The film tells the gripping story of a young German soldier on the Western Front of World War I,” reads the synopsis. “Paul and his comrades experience firsthand how the initial euphoria of war turns into desperation and fear as they fight for their lives and each other in the trenches.”
