Perfect Dark: Xbox Head Gives Reboot Update, Compares It to Bourne & James Bond

Despite concerns that the upcoming Perfect Dark reboot was in bad shape, Head of Xbox Games Studios Matt Booty has denied any issues with the game whatsoever.

Speaking during this weekend’s PAX West 2022 convention, Booty was asked about fans’ worries that developer The Initiative was partnering with Crystal Dynamics to work on the game, a move that many saw as a sign that the game was in a bad state of affairs. However, Booty says that it’s simply standard practice amongst video games nowadays.

“How we make games is evolving,” said Booty (via Eurogamer). “The idea of a single team under one roof really doesn’t happen that often anymore.”

Booty went on to note that he had seen the rumors floating around online but insisted they were just that. He proceeded to say that it made perfect sense for Xbox to partner with a studio that has a history of making games similar to what Perfect Dark is striving to be.

“We just did this big partnership with Crystal Dynamics and I read online that this must mean there’s a problem. It’s quite the opposite,” Booty said. “You’ve got this veteran team at Crystal Dynamics, a big AAA team with over a hundred people that becomes available — of course we want to work with them, particularly if they’ve made a game like that before.”

Booty also compared the game to franchises like The Bourne Identity and James Bond.

“What’s super cool about Perfect Dark, about Joanna Dark, is the super agent fantasy, The Bourne Identity, James Bond kind of thing,” Booty described. “That’s a cool meme, it’s something people want to lean into. But we’ve got to make sure that comes forward in the right way.”

After being announced at The Game Awards 2020 in the form of a teaser trailer, not too much else has been shown off on the planned game. Currently, the title remains in development, with both The Initiative and Crystal Dynamics working on the title, the latter of which is still helping co-develop the title despite recently being acquired by Embracer Group.
