Dying Light Dev Unveils New Fantasy RPG, Includes Witcher, Horizon Vets

Dying Light 2 only just released in February and the original Dying Light is still getting somewhat regular updates over seven years later, but that doesn’t mean that developer Techland isn’t busy making other games, too. The studio spoke more about the open-world fantasy role-playing game it is developing alongside talent that has worked on games like Horizon Zero Dawn, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, Deathloop, and more.

The game in question has no official name, release window, or platforms. And while the existence of the studio developing an open-world fantasy RPG may seem new, Lead Designer Tymon Smektała spoke about such a game in a recent interview with YouTuber OniZombies. Smektała even said that it is the Warsaw team that’s developing the RPG. Regardless, Techland only released one piece of concept art of the new IP and said that it is beefing up for this RPG, which is presumably still quite early on. Techland CEO Paweł Marchewka spoke how the team wanted to try something new after making two Dying Light games.

“We’re very happy with what we have accomplished with the Dying Light franchise so far,” said Marchewka. “Moreover, our journey with Dying Light 2 Stay Human has only just begun as we plan to support this game for at least five years, with its scope and size matching, if not exceeding, what we have provided our community with during post-launch support for its predecessor. At the same time, our ambition is to introduce a brand new IP that is vastly different from what we have been doing for the past several years. We want to create a fully next-gen experience. A new fantasy epic set in a sprawling open world, fueled by the skills and experience we have gained as a team over the years, infused with new ideas, passion, and creativity. While we cannot share more details about this project now, we’re all truly invested in it and looking forward to showing it to gamers when the time is right.”

Techland also recruited plenty of members that have experience making open-world RPGs, three of whom came from CD Projekt Red, which is also in Poland. Karolina Stachyra is the narrative director and previously worked at CD Projekt Red on the last two Witcher games. The same applies to Arkadiusz Borowik, who is narrative lead on this mystery RPG. Bartosz Ochman also came from CD Projekt Red and worked on The Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk 2077.

Mario Maltezos is the creative director and was previously at Ubisoft, Warner Bros., and Microsoft. David McClure, lead game designer, is known for his tenure at Arkane Studios, Deep Silver, and Playground Games. Kevin Quaid, lead animator, was at Guerrilla Games and helped make Horizon Zero Dawn. And finally Marcin Surosz came from fellow Polish developer People Can Fly.

Techland asked for interested applicants to apply to work at the studio, which is par for the course for recent reveals like this. Many see announcing a title at such an early stage as a way to attract talent. Blizzard Entertainment revealed a survival game with almost nothing to show. CD Projekt Red announced a a new Witcher installment with just an image. Rockstar Games spoke about another Grand Theft Auto without any sort of picture or trailer. These three examples also come from developers with a history of poor workplace practices, which also could be a reason why these specific studios need to announce a new game to attract more people.
