Loki Season 2 Will Cover ‘New Emotional Ground’ and Subvert Expectations

The first season of Marvel Studios’ Disney+ series Loki set the stage for the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, introducing Kang the Conquerer as well as opening the door for the multiverse. In a recent interview, screenwriter Michael Waldron teased what’s to come in the second season.

Waldron — who served as head writer on Loki and was also a writer on Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness — said that when coming up with an idea for the second season, the team had to find “new emotional ground to cover” or it wouldn’t be worth doing. Thankfully, Waldron believes they did and that fans will be surprised by how it continues Loki’s story.

“In creating the show in the first place, the only way it’s worth doing to me is that we can find a new story to tell with this character,” Waldron told Deadline. “It felt like we had new emotional ground to cover with Loki. That’s the only way into season 2. We absolutely found that. It’s a great continuation of that story that feels different from season one and hopefully will subvert expectations.”

Season 2 of Loki isn’t expected to air until early 2023, and it’s currently unknown exactly what the season will address, especially following the chaotic end of the first series, which set up Kang as one of the bigger villains in the overarching Marvel Cinematic Universe while seemingly transporting Loki into a different universe entirely.
