Karyn Kusama-Directed Dracula Film Axed Weeks Before Filming Starts

According to Deadline, Miramax has officially decided to cancel the production of Blumhouse’s Dracula film titled Mina Harker, which hailed from director Karyn Kusama, who has been attached to the project since 2020. The outlet’s sources note that the cancellation is due to the studio’s creative differences with Kusama. Before this, the horror film was originally scheduled to start filming in three weeks, with Emmy winner Jasmine Cephas Jones set to lead the project.

Based on Bram Stoker’s 1897 horror novel of the same name, the Karyn Kusama-directed Dracula film was co-written by Matt Manfredi and Phil Hay. Due to the critical and commercial success of Leigh Whannell’s The Invisible Man, Blumhouse was hoping to put on a modern spin on the Prince of Darkness with the same moderate budget as the Elisabeth Moss-led thriller.

Mina Harker was set to be produced by Kusama, Hay, Manfredi, Jason Blum, and Miramax’s Bill Block, with Bea Sequeira executive producing.

Kusama is familiar with the horror genre, having directed the comedy thriller Jennifer’s Body from a script by Diablo Cody. She also directed episodes of HBO’s The Outsider, based on Stephen King’s novel of the same name. She recently worked on Showtime’s new hit series Yellowjackets, where she served as the pilot director and executive producer.
