Box Office Results: Sonic 2 Dominates, Ambulance Crashes and Burns

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 lit up the domestic box office this weekend, scoring a $71 million three-day opening that surpasses the original’s start.

According to Deadline, the total is enough to top Bruce Almighty’s $68 million opening in 2003, making the video game sequel Jim Carrey’s biggest opening to date. Internationally, Sonic raked in another $37 million thus bringing its overseas total to $70 million and worldwide sum to a massive $141 million.

Michael Bay’s Ambulance, meanwhile, was left on life support, earning just $8.7 million domestically after hauling in just $3.3 million on Saturday. The A- CinemaScore provides a silver lining, but this is really disappointing for such a high-profile release.

It’s worth noting that Warner Bros’ latest entry in its Fantastic Beasts franchise, The Secrets of Dumbledore, is off to a magical start, grossing $58 million from 22 offshore markets. The pic opens stateside this week and it’ll be interesting to see whether the third chapter can muster more enthusiasm than The Crimes of Grindelwald, which topped out with $655 million worldwide, which wound up being over $150 million less than its predecessor.
