Kurosawa-Esque Trek to Yomi Release Date Announced With Extended Gameplay Trailer

Trek to Yomi has been one of Devolver Digital’s most striking games, but it never got more than a vague release window. However, the publisher has now narrowed down on a specific day. Trek to Yomi will come out on May 5 on PC, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, and Xbox One for $19.99. It will also launch on Game Pass.

This announcement came bundled with a 15-minute gameplay demo, which is the first lengthy look at the game in action that Flying Wild Hog has shown, as the demo from December 2021 was only 89 seconds. The combat looks to thrive on lethal strikes and countering, much like other sword-based games like Ghost of Tsushima.

The 2.5D gameplay seems to not always make the player run from left to right from the same perspective, which makes Trek to Yomi seem a bit bigger and more dynamic than other games of its ilk. The protagonist can be seen looping through villages, running over bridges, and navigating irregular terrain in between slicing through enemies and cutscenes. The presentation also evokes the spirit of Akira Kurosawa’s famous samurai films and is evident in both the gameplay and narrative sections.

This is Flying Wild Hog’s second game this year behind Shadow Warrior 3, a first-person shooter with a vastly different tone. The studio is also working on Evil West, a supernatural Western shooter that’s set to release later this year, too.
