Details on the film are being kept under wraps, but A24 describes the film as “an action epic” that takes place in a near-future America. Civil War comes from an original screenplay that Garland (Ex Machina, Annihilation) wrote. A24 will produce the film alongside Andrew Macdonald and Allon Reich of DNA and Gregory Goodman. A24 will also be handling the global release of the film.

Garland’s past work with A24 has been extremely successful, with his last film — the sci-fi hit Ex Machina — with the company earning him massive praise, as well as various Academy Award nominations in 2016, including one for Best Writing and Best Original Screenplay. The film ended up winning an Academy Award for Best Achievement in Visual Effects. After that, Garland directed the sci-fi horror film Annihilation, and also worked on Devs, a television for FX.

Dunst is currently coming off of her role in The Power of the Dog, a role for which she is earning rave reviews, as well as a recent SAG Award nomination in the Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role category. Dunst has also received a Primetime Emmy nomination for her role as Peggy Blumquist in FX’s Fargo.

Wagner Moura is perhaps best known for his role as legendary drug kingpin Pablo Escobar on Netflix’s Narcos, for which he earned a Golden Globe nomination in 2016. He also wrote, directed, and produced Marighella, and will be starring opposite Elisabeth Moss in AppleTV+’s upcoming The Shining Girls.
