Chadwick Boseman Will Appear in Four Episodes of Marvel’s What If…?

Speaking to ComicBook.com’s Brandon Davis, executive producer Brad Winderbaum said that Boseman will actually be in four episodes of the upcoming series.

“He’s in four episodes, actually,” Winderbaum said. “He plays different versions of the character. I wouldn’t say that anything changed drastically. We wanted to honor, frankly, his performance and his eagerness to be a part of the project. In retrospect, he recorded these episodes for us knowing what we all know now. We wanted to honor what he did, so we actually didn’t change a lot of it. There were certain things, in the context of his passing, especially musically…Lauren Karpman delivered what I think is an incredible score for the entire series and the way she approached T’Challa throughout, especially in light of his passing, is really beautiful.”

While we know that one of the stories involving Boseman will see T’Challa getting abducted by the Reavers and thus becoming Star-Lord instead of the Black Panther, it’s unclear what the other spots he’ll appear in are. Thankfully for fans, however, they won’t have to wait too long, as the series is set to debut next month.

Marvel Studios’ What If…? flips the script on the Marvel Cinematic Universe, reimagining famous events from the films in unexpected ways. Marvel Studios’ first animated series focuses on different heroes from the MCU, featuring a voice cast that includes a host of stars who reprise their roles. Every story in the show will be non-canonical, as the stories will feature some wildly different outcomes from their actual events in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The animated series will feature the introduction of The Watcher, who serves as the narrator throughout the first season. The character is being voiced by Jeffrey Wright. The MCU actors who are set to reprise their roles in the series include Michael B. Jordan as Killmonger, Sebastian Stan as the Winter Soldier, Josh Brolin as Thanos, Mark Ruffalo as Bruce/Hulk, Tom Hiddleston as Loki, Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury,  Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Hayley Atwell as Peggy Carter, Natalie Portman as Jane Foster, Paul Rudd as Scott Lang, and more.

What If…? hails from head writer AC Bradley and director Bryan Andrew. The first season is expected to only cover the events from the Infinity Saga.

The original What If comic book series debuted in 1977 and over time, 200 issues have been published. The stories ranged from the impossible to the ridiculous as Marvel looks to use the streaming service to tell more out-of-the-box stories unachievable through live-action.
