Coming off from the critical success of Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, Deadline brings rising actress Taylour Paige has been tapped to star as the female lead opposite Peter Dinklage in Legendary’s upcoming Toxic Avenger reboot. This new casting addition comes after nearly a month since Jacob Tremblay (Room, Good Boys) was confirmed as the first actor to join Dinklage in the project.

This marks Paige’s first high-profile project as one of the leads and her first project in the superhero genre. Next, she will be seen in A24’s biopic comedy-drama Zolastarring alongside Riley Keough and Nicholas Braun.

The Toxic Avenger remake is described as a contemporary reimagining of Troma Entertainment’s 1984 cult classic dark comedy that subverts the superhero genre akin to Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool. The reboot will center around a struggling everyman transformed into a mutant freak after being pushed into a vat of toxic waste. It must become an underdog hero to save his son, his friends, and the community from the forces of corruption and greed.

The upcoming film will be written and directed by acclaimed filmmaker Macon Blair (Green Room, Logan Lucky, Hold the Dark). Original directing-producing duo Lloyd Kaufman and Michael Herz are set to produce the reboot for Troma Entertainment, while Alex Garcia and Jay Ashenfelter will oversee development for Legendary.

Due to the success of the original film, it spawned off a low-budget superhero franchise consisting of three film sequels titled The Toxic Avenger Part II, The Toxie Avenger Part III: The Last Temptation of Toxie, and Citizen Toxie: The Toxic Avenger IV. It was also adapted into a stage musical production by Joe DiPietro and David Bryan and a children’s TV cartoon titled Toxic Crusaders.
